Send Large Files from Outlook with Acrobat.com - Free with 5GB Storage Space

Email messages can bounce if the file attachment size becomes too large. For instance, if you use Microsoft Outlook at work and send a 20 MB project report to a client who is on Yahoo! Mail, that message will never reach his inbox owing to the file size.

There’s a neat solution to this common problem now and it’s from Adobe.

outlook-acrobat

You probably remember that Adobe offers a free file hosting service at acrobat.com where you can store up to 5 GB of files for free. Now they have released a free Outlook add-in that make it easy for anyone to share files by email without having to worry about the size of attachments.

When you attach any files to your Outlook email, the add-in will directly upload them to your online acrobat account and will also insert the download links in the email message.

You can attach files of most common extensions (no MP3 songs or video clips though) and the email recipient can download the file directly from the web without having to create any account at acrobat.com.

YouSendIt for Outlook vs Acrobat.com

YouSendIt for Outlook is a similar add-in but there are a couple of reasons why you may want to use acrobat.com over yousendit:

1. Acrobat.com service is free with 5 GB of storage space.

2. Acrobat includes document preview so your email recipients can read PDF and Office files in the web browser itself without having to download the attachment.

3. File attachments stored on acrobat.com have no expiration date.

4. Email attachments that get uploaded to your online Acrobat.com account are assigned a unique web URL so you can use the same links in web pages, wikis, etc.

The downside is that the Acrobat.com Add-in for Microsoft Outlook supports Office 2007 only while the YouSendIt plugin is also available for Office 2003

How to Check Multiple Email Addresses for New Mail At Once

email accountsIn the last 15 years, I have had at least four different primary email addresses. My first email account was on MSN Hotmail (now Windows Live Hotmail), then I shifted to Yahoo Mail for some time, then to Google mail followed by Google Apps for Gmail.

Creating a new email account is easy (and often free) but the big problem is that you can’t completely ignore the old inbox (unless the service supports auto-forward) because some of your past contacts may still try to reach you on your previous (primary) addresses.

Now if you are in a similar situation as me and maintain two or more email addresses, here are some solutions that will help you check for new mail across all your web email accounts from a central location without having to log into individual accounts.

Option #1: Use a Desktop based mail client

Gmail, Google Apps for Mail and now Windows Live Hotmail officially support the POP3 protocol so you can check mails in any of these accounts though desktop mail clients like Microsoft Outlook, ThunderBird, Windows Live Mail or Eudura.

Since the free version of Yahoo! Mail doesn’t offer auto-forward or POP access facility, there’s a simple workaround - you can either use WebMail (for ThunderBird) or YPOPs and manage your Yahoo! emails from any desktop mail client.

Another good alternative here is Zimbra Desktop - it’s an Outlook like desktop software (developed by Yahoo) that will help you check mails across all your Yahoo! accounts for free. Zimbra is available on Mac, Windows and Linux.

If you prefer reading and replying to emails on the service provider’s website itself but need some sort of a desktop notifier to ping you as soon as new messages land in any of your inboxes, get ePrompter - this runs in the Windows system tray and can retrieve messages from all your web mail accounts at pre-defined intervals.

Option #2: Check mails on any computer

If you work across multiple computers, it may take lot of effort for you to install and configure desktop mail clients on all these individual machines. What you therefore need is ThunderBird Portable - it’s just like the desktop version of ThunderBird except that all settings and data are stored on the USB drive so you can easily carry it around and check mails on multiple email accounts from any computer anywhere.

Alternatively, you may try web based services like Fuser and Mail2Web that help you check all your email accounts on a single website. They provide a common inbox for all your web email accounts where you can send as well receive messages without having to log separately into any of you different mail accounts.

Fuser works with Microsoft Exchange as well so you check both personal and work related email simultaneously. Mail2Web offers a WAP version of the website optimized for the small screen of your mobile phones.

Option #3: Let one email address rule them all

The solutions that we discussed so far involved pulling up emails from multiple web accounts into one central location. What if all the messages that reach your secondary inboxes are pushed automatically to your main email address so you can check them in the web browser itself without having to configure anything?

There are two services that can help us here - the good old Gmail and the second is NutShellMail - it’s new and awesome.

Let’s start with Gmail. This Google mail service includes a featured called Mail Fetcher that will help download messages from up to five other email accounts into your central Gmail inbox. Thus you can check even non-Gmail accounts from Gmail as long as they support POP access (e.g., Windows Live Hotmail and Yahoo Mail Plus).

Things get much simpler if you want to use your Gmail (or Google Apps) account as a secondary address because Gmail can auto-forward all incoming messages to any other email account so you really don’t have to check your Gmail account ever except for any false positives that get caught in the Spam folder.

Next in this category is NutShellMail - it’s a relatively new web service that takes a different but very original approach to dealing with email.

Let’s assume that your main address is on Gmail but all the junk newsletters reach your Yahoo! address. You also maintain an AOL account because some of your old college friends still have that address.

Now NutShellMail is a web based service that will monitor all your secondary email addresses in the background and will send you a digest mail containing a list of messages that may have arrived in any your web mail accounts. You can click on the subject line of any message to read the contents.

This service will also come handy in places like your office where you can’t check personal mails (on say Gmail or Yahoo!) as access to the mail website has been blocked due to company policies. You can configure NutShellMail and it will send you snapshots of all your inboxes on a recurring schedule

iPhone OS 3.0 coming out on March 17th?

iphone-3-0

Apple is planning a special event on March 17th to discuss all that's new in the iPhone OS 3.0 and according to most of the speculation, Apple will be introducing all those new features in the iPhone for which it has been criticized so far.

Rumors say that the new iPhone OS shall feature a new SpringBoard which will allow the user to organize application in various folders or categories. Then we have the rumor about an integrated MMS (Multimedia Messaging) solution and native support for tethering your iPhone data connection to a notebook.

Copy and Paste is also not out of the question as it remains to be one of the most demanded feature for the iPhone.

Background Push Notification, which was supposed to make an appearance in earlier firmware, is also expected to debut in iPhone OS 3.0 though we are still not sure if Apple again plans to bail out on this one considering the battery time of the iPhone. As we reported earlier that Adobe and Apple are working together on Flash for iPhone so this might also be the right time for its debut.

As a new iPhone SDK is to be unveiled too, mostly everyone believes that Apple is actually building ground for the release of the 3rd Generation iPhone which could be out by this summer.

Adsense to publish revenue reports in Euros

Google Adsense has just announced that they will be publishing Adsense reports in Euros for publishers who are located in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain. The new system will now convert dollars into Euros on a daily basis by using the prevailing market rate from the previous day.

This way publishers will avoid the risk of currency exchange fluctuations between US Dollar and the Euro. Note that you will still have option to receive your payments in either U.S Dollars or Euros with a range of payment methods as well.

adsense

The new Terms and Conditions stated by Adsense are as followed

  • The party that publishers are contracting with changes from Google Inc. to Google Ireland Limited.
  • Publishers are responsible for paying any local taxes in their jurisdiction. Google will only issue VAT refunds to publishers with an address in Ireland.
  • The governing law changes from California law to either English or local law.

Further more it is highly recommended that you download and save copies of all your previous earnings in U.S dollars. As soon as you update your account you will be able to view current and past reports only in Euros while you'll still be able to view your prior payment history of U.S. Dollar earnings.

Banned AdSense Publisher Gets His Money Back from Google

It’s not uncommon to hear stories of disgruntled AdSense publishers whose accounts have been permanently banned by Google either due to "non-compliance with AdSense policies" or for "posing a significant risk to AdWords advertisers."

The compliance issue is almost always related to content. For instance, if any particular website is centered around banned topics (like gambling or pornography), Google can disable AdSense serving for that website.

The next issue is more serious as it relates to "click fraud". No one obviously has a clear understanding of how Google determines "invalid clicks" but such an activity can invite an AdSense ban for life. There’s an appeal process at Google but again it doesn’t guarantee that your AdSense account will be reinstated even if you provide all the required details (like web server logs).

Aaron Greenspan was another happy AdSense user until he received an email from Google saying that his account has been cancelled.

While going through our records recently, we found that your AdSense account has posed a significant risk to our AdWords advertisers. Since keeping your account in our publisher network may financially damage our advertisers in the future, we’ve decided to disable your AdSense account.

Aaron writes in Huffington Post that his AdSense account was disabled without warning and he literally ran from pillar to post at Google trying to reach everyone from the AdSense Customer Service to the Legal Team to Google forums but with no success.

If an AdSense publisher’s account is disabled for invalid clicks, he is not entitled to any further payment from Google and all the current earnings are returned to the corresponding AdWords advertisers. The same happened to Aaron as he had made around $721 from AdSense but the payment was stopped after the account was disabled.

With literally no options left, Aaron made a final attempt and filed a civil lawsuit for $721.00 (the amount Google owed to him) saying that Google could not prove any wrongdoing and that Google’s fraud detection algorithm was imperfect. All he had to pay was $40 as the court fees for this lawsuit.

The AdSense account was disabled on December 9, 2008, he filed the lawsuit against Google on January 15, 2009 and on March 2, 2009, the judge delivered the following verdict:

I don’t think I have the power here in Palo Alto small claims court to make you reinstate his account, but I think you owe this young man $721. I think there might be money in Google’s treasury for that.

Google paid him all the "due" AdSense earnings along with the court fees though his account still stands cancelled.

I think a big reason why Google lost this case is because their lawyer couldn’t convince the judge about how "click fraud" was detected in first place. Google has good reasons to not disclose their fraud detection algorithms in public court cases but the fact that this decision went against Google could probably convince many more ex-AdSense users to follow the footsteps of Aaron.

“Google messes up Adsense payments this time”

It seems that this time the biggest Internet company Google, has hurried up the Payments process which are provided to Adsense Publishers as there earnings. They have messed up many things which I would like to mention below:

1) This time the payment was issued early on FEB 18,2009 which previously used to be issued by 26th of every month.

2) Previously, Google used to send cheques to Indian Adsense publishers via local government postal service but this time they sent it via BlueDart courier service. I also received an e-mail from Google regarding this saying:

As you may know, you’re scheduled to receive an AdSense payment this month. Today, I’m writing to let you know that although you’ve selected Standard Delivery for this payment, we’ll actually be able to send it to you via the Blue Dart courier service, at no additional cost to you.

3) No tracking code assigned as said by them in their e-mail

By early next week, you’ll also be able to see a tracking number in the payment details of this payment which you can track at www.bluedart.com.

4) This time the Adsense cheque I received was from Google Hyderabad Office and not from the previous Singapore location.

5) My check arrived on March 5,2009 via Bluedart as said by Google. I was shocked to see my Adsense check because some important details were missing on it like:

  • No MICR CODE printed on the cheque.
  • No “A/C PAYEE only” mentioned on the check. (making it Bearer one)
  • Some entries names also seemed to be changed.

image

These mistakes are not too small to be avoided. Without the line “A/C PAYEE Only” the cheque has become bearer and can be encashed by anyone who receives it.

I contacted Google about this issue but there seems no one to answer up my mails. I’ve even posted about this issue on Adsense Help Forum but again no luck for me there.

Note: This problem can also be because the offering of checks via BlueDart is under “Beta Test” as said by google.

If you are also having certain issues related to Google Adsense, then use the comments section to share your problems with us. Hope this issue goes off to google and they will help me out.

Look Thin & Slim in your Photographs Instantly

Do you want to look thinner in pictures before you upload them on to Facebook or MySpace? Then all you need is a spare minute to shed those extra pounds virtually.

weight loss in photographs

Weight Mirror is a online tool that lets you to lose up to 50 pounds (23kg) in photographs without exercising any fancy Photoshop wizardry.

The picture of the model above was taken from Microsoft Photo Gallery and the results after manipulation were quite impressive. The face and shoulders in the photograph were left untouched while Weight Mirror squeezed everything else.

To use Weight Mirror, simply upload a front-on photo to their website, specify the location of your face in the picture (the tool is pretty good at automatic face recognition) and then select the number of pounds you wish to lose virtually (i.e., only in the picture).

transform face online

Weight Mirror then creates a series of photographs each of which is 10 pounds lighter (or appears to be lighter) than the previous image.

Other “non natural” ways of losing weight include learning Photoshop, hiring a photo retouching expert or buying a HP digital camera.

Extract Files from RAR, ZIP, 7z and other Compressed Archives Online

zipped filesYou don’t need an external utility (say WinZip) to uncompress .zip files but unfortunately, the built-in decompressor of Windows Explorer cannot handle other popular zip formats like 7z, RAR, Z or TAR.

If someone sent you an email attachment, or you downloaded a file from the Internet, that is compressed using one of these formats, there’s still no need for you to install a new software to extract the contents - just head over to WobZip, upload the compressed file and you’re done.

WobZip will help you upload a compressed file under 100Mb in size. You may also use the tool to uncompress zipped files that may be protected by a password. Internally, they use the popular 7-zip utility to perform the decompression.

unzip-files

Now what I liked most about WobZip is that it can extract online zipped files as well. So if you happen to come across a .zip file on some website, you can simply pass the web address (URL) of that file to WobZip without having to download the file on your local drive - I am sure I’ll use this tool a lot to browse the source of WordPress plugins.

An online unzip utility like WobZip may be very handy for mobile phones as well that have a web browser but there’s no tool to uncompress zipped files.

Note that WobZip advertises itself as “in development” and “not guaranteed to be bug free”, so it may not be a bad idea to double-check the deflated archives.
